Itinerary
Day 1 – Kansas City, MO – BBQ Dinner & Jazz Music
Arrive today in Kansas City, MO and check into your area hotel for a two-night stay. Tonight, enjoy a barbecue dinner at a local restaurant. Kansas City is known for its world-class barbecue and has over 100 mouth-watering barbecue restaurants dotted around the metro area.
Following dinner, visit a local venue for an evening of jazz music. Kansas City is also known for its jazz music and its jazz roots run deep with over 40 jazz venues. The history of Kansas City jazz can be traced back to the blues, which began in the Mississippi Delta region near New Orleans, eventually migrating north. Once here, it melded with a sort of jump timber that soon became the distinctive sound the city still calls its own. (D)
Day 2 – American Jazz Museum – Negro League Museum – Mutual Musicians Foundation Jazz Luncheon – Brewery Tour & Tasting – Cooking Demonstration & Dinner at The Culinary Center of Kansas City
This morning, visit the American Jazz Museum where the sights and sounds of a uniquely American art form comes alive. The Museum includes interactive exhibits as well as the Blue Room, a working jazz club, and the Gem Theater, a modern 500-seat performing arts center.
Located in the 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District in Kansas City, this is the place where jazz masters such as Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Big Joe Turner, and hundreds of others defined the sounds of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Today, scholars, students, musicians, and fans are drawn here to learn about the legends, honor their legacy, or simply enjoy the best music America has to offer.
Next, visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum which recreates the look, sounds and feel of the game’s storied past. Video presentations and memorabilia in the 10,000 square-foot multimedia exhibit chronicle the history and heroes of the leagues from their origin after the Civil War to their demise in the 1960s. The federal government recently designated the museum America’s National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
The museum is laid out as a timeline of the Negro Leagues and American history. Exhibits include hundreds of photographs, historical artifacts and several interactive computer stations. As the centerpiece of the NLBM, the Coors Field of Legends features 10 life-sized bronze sculptures of Negro Leagues greats positioned on a mock baseball diamond as if they were playing a game.
Next, head to the Mutual Musicians Foundation for a Jazz Luncheon. Originally home to the Black Musicians’ Protective Union Local 627 A.F. of M., the foundation continues its grand tradition as a living tribute to the city’s long and illustrious musical history. In 1979, the Foundation was prominently featured in Bruce Ricker’s film, “The Last of the Blue Devils.”
Enjoy a catered lunch, plus a presentation by staff of the Mutual Musicians Foundation on the history of the foundation and a live jazz performance.
The afternoon will also include a tour and tasting at one of Kanas City’s local breweries. Kansas City has become one of the fastest-growing craft beer destinations in the country.
End the day with dinner and a cooking demonstration at The Culinary Center of Kansas City. The focus of the evening will be Barbecue because Kansas City is one of the great BBQ capitals of the world! Learn from one of the best BBQ instructors and discover a thing or two about BBQ while enjoying a fun evening and delicious food. (B,L,D)
